Back then, it was known as Muay Boran, which literally means "ancient boxing."

In an era when battles were often fought at close range, knowing how to use fists, elbows, knees, and kicks could mean the difference between life and death.

Many of the techniques we see in the ring today originated from that combat system developed centuries ago.

The Legend of Nai Khanom Tom

It is impossible to talk about the history of Muay Thai without mentioning Nai Khanom Tom.

According to legend, after the fall of the ancient capital of Ayutthaya in 1767, Nai Khanom Tom was captured by the Burmese army.

To prove the skill and courage of the Siamese people, he was given the opportunity to fight several Burmese opponents.

It is said that he defeated them one after another using the techniques of Muay Boran, earning his freedom and becoming a national hero.

To this day, March 17th is celebrated in Thailand as National Muay Thai Day in his honor.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of participating several times in the Nai Khanom Tom Day celebrations, competing in the festivals organized for the occasion. Experiencing these events as a fighter gives you a deeper understanding of how closely Muay Thai is connected to Thai history, culture, and national identity.

Whether the story is legend or historical fact, its significance remains immense within Thai culture.

From Muay Boran to Modern Muay Thai

As Thailand evolved, Muay Thai evolved with it.

What began as a military fighting system gradually transformed into a regulated sport.

Gloves, boxing rings, weight classes, and standardized rules were introduced,

making Muay Thai safer and more accessible while helping it spread throughout the world.

Despite these changes, many traditional elements have survived to this day.

Before every fight, athletes still perform the Wai Kru Ram Muay, a ceremonial dance used to pay respect to their teachers, gym, and tradition.

The Sarama music that accompanies fights in Thailand also remains an essential part of the Muay Thai experience.

The Golden Era of Muay Thai

Many fans consider the 1980s and 1990s to be the true Golden Era of Muay Thai.

It was a period when technical skill reached extraordinary levels.

Names such as Samart Payakaroon, Dieselnoi Chor Thanasukarn, and Yodmuangchai Sor Ploenchit are still regarded as legends today.

Fights were contested over five rounds and followed a structure very different from what we often see today.

The early rounds were typically used to study the opponent and establish a strategy.

The real battle often began in the second half of the fight.

It was a more calculated, technical style of Muay Thai, built around timing, balance, and control of the pace.

As a fighter who began competing when the traditional five-round format was still the norm, I have always appreciated this more strategic approach. It was a style of Muay Thai in which timing, experience, and ring intelligence carried tremendous weight.

Muay Thai Today

In recent years, Muay Thai has undergone significant changes.

International promotions such as ONE Championship have helped bring the sport to a global audience, but they have also changed some of its traditional dynamics.

Fights are often reduced to three rounds.

The pace is much faster from the opening bell.

Entertainment has become a greater priority.

Fighters are encouraged to pursue spectacular exchanges and powerful finishes to capture the audience's attention.

As someone who lives and trains in Thailand, I have been fortunate enough to witness both worlds.

The traditional Muay Thai of Thailand's stadiums and the modern version designed for international audiences.

They are different, but both are part of the natural evolution of the sport.

Why Muay Thai Continues to Captivate the World

Perhaps that is the true secret of Muay Thai.

Its ability to evolve without completely losing its roots.

Behind every kick, elbow, knee, and punch lies a history that spans centuries.

A history built on warriors, traditions, culture, and sacrifice.

And that is probably what continues to fascinate millions of people around the world.

Conclusion

After nearly twenty years immersed in this world, I still believe that Muay Thai is far more than a combat sport.

It is a school of life.

A bridge between past and present.

A tradition that continues to evolve without forgetting where it came from.

And perhaps that is exactly why, after all these years, I continue to fall in love with it every single day.

When people think about Muay Thai, they usually see it simply as a combat sport.
